Warning signs of periodontal (gum) disease

Periodontal diseases are often described as silent – in that they don’t cause any symptoms that might be readily associated with disease or a problem.

A lot of people complain about bleeding gums when they clean their teeth. Most people put this down to simply “brushing too hard”  when in fact bleeding gums can be a warning sign of underlying periodontal disease.

If you are not brushing and flossing your teeth on a daily basis bacteria (dental plaque) build up on your teeth and around the gumline.  If this bacterial deposit is not removed for a day or more the gums respond by becoming swolllen and red (inflammed).  Over time inflammed gums can become chronically inflamed.
